Why 'free to start' matters for UCR specifically
Two things are true of this industry. Plenty of operators don't owe UCR at all — genuinely intrastate-only — and plenty more are about to pay a bracket too high because of a truck count nobody has looked at in three years. Taking money before either question is answered is how the sketchy corners of this market work, and it's why the free portion isn't a teaser: it covers exactly the stretch where you find out whether you should be here at all.
What you get before paying anything
First, the lookup: your public carrier record — legal name, address, operating status, authority type, carrier classifications and the power-unit count on your most recent MCS-150 — mapped against the current bracket table, so you see whether UCR applies and what the government fee would be. Then the first four screens of the official portal, with the copilot alongside you: the entry screen (USDOT, Terms acknowledgement, reCAPTCHA), the "Is this you?" confirmation that makes you re-enter your USDOT, the registration-history dashboard showing every year's status along with your base state and your MCS-150's "Last Updated" date, and the Intrastate Only Notice where you certify that your business is subject to UCR. If that certification tells you you're outside the program, you stop there having spent nothing — which is the entire point.
What paying unlocks

Do I pay the government fee through EasyUCR?+
